Beach cruiser Schwinn deluxe 1995
“Yes, it’s a bike, but not just any bike—and not just any story!
First of all, it’s a “Beach Cruiser De Luxe” from the famous American brand Schwinn, the legendary model designed in 1955 by Arnold Schwartz (Raymond Loewi’s favorite protégé), presented here in its “reimagined” version for the brand’s centennial in 1995. It has therefore been modernized (notably with a 4-speed Shimano derailleur and a front brake on the handlebars) but retains its original features: a coaster brake rear hub, a comfortable saddle (and even chrome tire caps!), and above all, the famous “fuel tank”-style fairing that gives it the unique look of a Harley-Davidson with pedals.
It’s in excellent condition here: the paint, tires, and mechanics are flawless; there are just a few scuffs on some of the decals (see photos).
This particular bike has led a wonderful life: given as a prize to the (French) winners of the 1998 Miami Beach golf tournament, Yves and Irène Zimmerman, it began its life by cruising gently along the beaches and coastal paths of Normandy (near Trouville) before taking a break and finding a new owner in jockey Martin Saint-Hélion, who, rather than ride it, simply displayed it in a room of his country house, among the other American design objects he collected. Upon his death, it passed to his daughter for a while before I was able to acquire it myself—not so much to ride it as for the pleasure of owning such an original piece.
I have no doubt that it is now bringing joy to another collector—or a bike enthusiast like me—who will delight in looking at it and riding it.”
