Grand tableau par Marie Wolfs
““—And this painting—are you going to sell it?” my daughter asks me as we walk around the apartment so I can decide what to take with me and what I’d rather get rid of.
“Oh no, definitely not that one—I’m too attached to it, and I love it (even if some people say you should only love God). I’ll never sell it!”
Never, never… You should never say “Never say never…”
It was 2006, and I was getting ready to leave Rue des Beaux-Arts, where I’d spent twenty years—twenty wonderful years because they’d seen my children be born and grow up. But all good things must come to an end; the children began to spread their wings, and one fine day, it was I who said goodbye to that quirky courtyard apartment, sheltered by a large tree.
The painting spent many long years in storage, from which it was briefly retrieved to brighten the wall of a small Parisian pied-à-terre.
But between Paris and me—in the end—no, it was truly over.
And in my countryside home, so bright with all its windows, there was no wall to welcome it.
So perhaps it’s in your home that these languid, tall women will now continue their siesta, all the while casually watching over your precious family.
